For Adolescents and Families

Adolescence isn’t just a stage to get through. It’s a remarkable time of growth, discovery, creativity and possibility.

Your brain is developing rapidly, your understanding of yourself is changing, and you’re beginning to discover the people, places, ideas and experiences that matter to you.

Did you know…

Your brain is incredibly adaptable.
During adolescence, your brain is strengthening the connections you use most and developing new ways of learning, thinking, solving problems and understanding the world. It’s a time when there is enormous potential to learn, grow and discover what you’re capable of.

You’re naturally wired to explore.
Wanting new experiences, taking on challenges and discovering what excites you are all part of becoming your own person. That curiosity and energy can lead to creativity, courage and some pretty amazing ideas.

Your capacity for connection is growing too.
Friendship, empathy, belonging and understanding other people become increasingly important during these years. You’re learning how to care, communicate, trust and build relationships — skills that can become incredibly meaningful when you’re forming a connection with a rescue animal.

And yes, emotions can sometimes feel BIG.
That intensity isn’t a sign that something is wrong with you. Adolescence is a time when emotions, experiences and relationships can feel particularly powerful. Learning to understand those feelings is part of discovering who you are and how you want to move through the world.

You’re not a half-finished adult.
You’re a young person with your own strengths, ideas, personality, perspective and potential. You don’t need to have everything figured out yet.

This is your season of becoming.

A time to discover your strengths.
To find your voice.
To try things, make mistakes and try again.
To discover what matters to you.
To learn how to care for yourself — and others.

And perhaps, along the way, to discover the incredible friendship that can grow between you and an animal who needs someone willing to be patient, kind and willing to build trust.

You have more potential than you probably realise.

Adolescence is a time of discovery, growth and possibility. It’s a chance to learn more about yourself, build confidence and discover the things that make you feel connected and alive.

At Paws & Connect, we believe that meaningful relationships can make this chapter even more special.

Through thoughtful connections with rescue animals, we hope to create opportunities for young people to experience friendship, responsibility, compassion and the simple joy of caring for another living being.

Because sometimes, the smallest moments can make a big difference

Meaningful connections. Lasting friendships.

Paws & Connect brings together young people, families and rescue animals to create safe, caring relationships that can grow over time.

Our program is about more than spending time with an animal. It’s about discovering what it feels like to be trusted, to care for someone, to be part of something meaningful and to have a connection that is truly your own.

We work with families and rescue organisations to help create relationships that are right for everyone involved — relationships that support the young person, respect the animal and bring something positive to both.

A little more connection. A little more confidence. A lot more possibility.

Finding the right connection

Every young person is different. Every family is different. And every rescue animal has their own personality, needs and story.

That’s why we believe the best connections happen when we take the time to understand everyone involved.

We look at things like:

Together with our rescue partners, we thoughtfully consider what might be the right fit.

It’s not about finding the “perfect” animal. It’s about finding a connection that feels right, safe and meaningful for everyone.

Two ways to begin your journey

Every family’s circumstances are different, so we offer two possible pathways.

Get to know each other, take your time and see if the relationship feels right.

A young person and their family can welcome a rescue animal into their home as a foster carer. This gives everyone the opportunity to build a relationship, learn about each other and discover whether adoption might be the right next step.

For families who are ready to welcome a rescue animal as a permanent member of the family.

With thoughtful matching and support from the beginning, families can adopt a rescue animal and begin building their relationship together.

Whichever pathway is chosen, the goal is the same: a safe, loving and mutually beneficial relationship that can grow over time.

You don’t have to do it all on your own

Welcoming a rescue animal into your home is a wonderful opportunity, but it’s also a commitment. We want families to feel supported, informed and confident every step of the way.

We also work with families to understand how things are going, celebrate what’s working and help address any challenges that arise.

Our aim is to help families feel supported — and to help every relationship get off to the best possible start.

Because everyone deserves to feel safe

At Paws & Connect, safety and wellbeing are at the heart of everything we do.

We take the time to understand the needs of young people, families and rescue animals before a connection begins. We work closely with our rescue partners, encourage open communication and provide support throughout the journey.

We also recognise that relationships take time. Sometimes things go smoothly, and sometimes a little extra patience or support is needed.

That’s why we believe in ongoing support, regular check-ins and making sure everyone is comfortable with how things are progressing.

Most importantly, we want every young person to feel respected, every family to feel supported and every animal to be treated with care, kindness and understanding.

Because a meaningful connection is one that is good for everyone.
